Matt Ferris, a native of Tacoma, WA, began his elite playing for three years with the Puget Sound Tomahawks in Bremerton, Washington. During those three years of junior hockey, Ferris also had two different stints at the Tier 2 level in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, playing for the Waywayseecappo Wolverines as well as the Winkler Flyers. During his three years in the NPHL, Ferris helped his Tomahawks make the playoffs all three seasons, once getting to the NPHL finals, falling to the Queen City Cutthroats in four games. Although he contributed offensively, Ferris excelled at the defensive side of the game, taking pride in shutting down the opposing teams forwards.
At the completion of his Junior career, Ferris went to college at Utah State University, playing five years of collegiate hockey in the ACHA a Division II Program. Ferris was the teams assistant captain in his final two years in Logan, Utah. Ferris and the Utah State hockey team made it all the way to the National tournament in San Jose in his final year. Ferris graduated with a degree in Journalism.
Upon graduating, Matt Ferris fulfilled a dream to play minor pro hockey, skating for three months in Danville, Illinois, for the Danville Dashers of the Federal Hockey League.
Ferris was released from Danville in December of 2011. He then returned to Tacoma where he join the West Sound Warriors as its Assistant Coach. Ferris was hired as the Head Coach of the Tacoma Knights in August of 2014.
